The end of summer is drawing near and Labor Day, the last holiday of the season, will be upon us in just a few short days. I have to admit that Labor Day was something I’d always look forward to – who doesn’t like a day off from the drudgery of the daily grind? But the past two years have been a little different for me.
You see, I don’t dread going to work anymore nor do I experience the Sunday evening blues.
I had a friend recently ask me, “Do you really love your job and who you work for, because it sure seems like it.” I went on to tell him a few years ago when I was toying with finding a new job, I swore I never wanted to work for a bank again. I wanted to make a difference in our community. And it just didn’t seem like a bank was the place for that.
But, everything changed when I interviewed with David Reiling, Sunrise Banks CEO. Quickly, I learned that Sunrise Banks wasn’t just another bank. Sunrise Banks has a mission TIMES margin philosophy about their business – We are driven to empower the underserved to achieve their aspirations. So, for me working for a bank that is more like a social enterprise, gives me the opportunity to use innovation to multiply the positive impact in the urban core through partnerships across the city.
And, as I lead the communications practice at Sunrise, I get the great honor of telling the compelling story about Sunrise Banks every day.
According to the Department of Labor, Labor Day is defined as a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.
Reading this definition of Labor Day now has more meaning than before, because I know I’m working for an organization who truly is making a significant difference.
