Sunrise Banks CEO David Reiling Named Chair of Global Alliance for Banking on Values

March 8, 2021

Reiling takes the helm as Board Chair of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, an international network of banking leaders committed to advancing positive change in the banking sector.

(St. Paul, Minn. | March 8, 2021) – The Global Alliance for Banking on Values Off Site Link (GABV), a network of banks and banking cooperatives with a shared mission to use finance to deliver sustainable economic, social and environmental development, has announced the appointment of David Reiling to Chair of its Board of Directors. Reiling, who previously served as a GABV board member representing the North America chapter, succeeds Peter Blom, the GABV’s Founder and Chair Emeritus, who served as chair since the inception of the organization in 2009. Blom will retire from Triodos Bank after 41 years of service later this year.

“It is a great honor to succeed Peter Blom as the Chair of the GABV. Peter’s vision and leadership to create and grow the world’s first global network of independent sustainable banks are big shoes to fill,” said Reiling.

Reiling’s appointment was announced at the 13th GABV annual meeting, a virtual event hosted by Sunrise Banks. Reiling, Sunrise Banks CEO, has been in the community development banking industry for more than 25 years. Sunrise has grown its assets and social and environmental impact tenfold since his arrival in 1995. Under Reiling’s leadership, Sunrise Banks became the first Minnesota bank certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), a Certified B Corporation, a legal Benefit Corporation, and a member of the GABV.

The GABV works to create sustainable economic, social and environmental development. It has spearheaded initiatives like the Climate Change Commitment, which asks member banks to measure the carbon footprint of their financed emissions. The GABV is made up of mission-based banks intent on making the financial system more accessible for traditionally underbanked consumers.

“This is a significant moment in the history of the GABV. I am deeply grateful to Peter for his vision, dedication and passion for values-based banking that led to the creation and growth of the GABV,” said GABV Executive Director Martin Rohner. “Equally, I am excited for what the future holds under David’s leadership. David brings an entrepreneurial spirit and track record of innovation which will be critical to our ability to adapt and scale our impact.”

Reiling will assume his new role immediately.
