ST. PAUL, Minn. (June 17, 2025) – Thanks to a partnership between Sunrise Banks and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines), four Minneapolis-based nonprofits will each receive $10,000 grants through the Member Impact Fund. These grants will help expand their efforts to support affordable housing, community development and entrepreneurship in low-to-moderate income neighborhoods.
“We are dedicated to supporting the work our nonprofit partners do every day to uplift the families, business owners and neighbors they serve,” says Bryan Toft, chief revenue officer at Sunrise Banks. “This matching grant program through FHLB Des Moines helps amplify that work to build stronger, more inclusive communities.”
The four recipients of the Member Impact Fund grants include:
Housing in Action (formerly Urban Homeworks) – Housing in Action builds affordable homeownership opportunities, provides dignified rentals, creates accessible pathways to homeownership, and connects communities to their elected officials, offering relief to neighbors within the current unjust housing system while creating deeper change.
Lake Street Council – Since 1968, the Lake Street Council has worked to build an organization that serves the needs of Lake Street’s unique and diverse community. The group’s programs support entrepreneurs, beautify buildings and streetscape, and engage businesses and executives in policy initiatives.
Minnesota Consortium of Community Developers (MCCD) – MCCD is an association of nonprofit community development organizations committed to expanding the wealth and resources of neighborhoods through housing and economic development initiatives through small business technical assistance and access to flexible capital.
Metropolitan Economic Development Association (MEDA) – For more than 50 years, MEDA has served thousands of underrepresented entrepreneurs by providing integrated, holistic services in the three areas all entrepreneurs need to succeed: business consulting, access to capital, and connections.
Sunrise Banks nominated the four nonprofits for these grants as part of the Member Impact Fund. This fund provides FHLB Des Moines members up to $3 for every $1 in matching grant donations to strengthen the ability of nonprofits or government entities to support the needs of their communities. Sunrise Banks provided $2,500 to each of the nonprofits listed below. FHLB Des Moines triple-matched each award, providing $7,500 to each organization for a total of $10,000 each.
“The Member Impact Fund continues to be a powerful resource in supporting our members as they expand access to affordable housing and drive community development,” says Kris Williams, president and CEO of FHLB Des Moines. “It’s inspiring to see the partnerships centered around improving local communities in such a variety of ways.”
Since its founding in 2023, the Member Impact Fund has supported affordable housing and community development with nearly $70 million in grants awarded by FHLB Des Moines. Member institutions apply and receive Member Impact Fund matching grants to be distributed to eligible organizations alongside their own grant contribution.
