The Stonewall Inn is a relatively non-descript bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighborhood.
Its brick façade and neon sign mimic other ordinary watering holes found all across Manhattan, and to the unknowing passerby the building is a seemingly unremarkable structure.
But more than 50 years ago, Stonewall was the site of a historic incident that galvanized the LGBTQ+ community and created a movement that still lives on five decades later. New York Police raided the bar – a gay club – on June 28, 1969, leading to days of protests and a renewed discussion surrounding gay rights and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. It should also be noted that many of the pioneering activists at Stonewall were people of color. Off Site Link
The Stonewall raid and subsequent riots inspired the Pride celebration we know today. June – the month in which the Stonewall riots occurred – is Pride Month. And Sunrise Banks is proud to support the LGBTQ+ community this month and throughout the year.
At Sunrise, we believe the freedom to be and love who you choose is a human right. No questions asked.
Wondering what’s going on in the Twin Cities during Pride? Check out the Twin Cities Pride website Off Site Link for events happening throughout the month of June, including the annual Pride march Off Site Link taking place on Sunday, June 26.
