How It Works
Apply for a $500 12-month (21% APR) or $750 18-month (15% APR) Credit Builder loan2. You may have up to 3 Credit Builder loans at one time.
You will not directly receive the loan funds. Instead, we will place the principal loan amount in a Certificate of Deposit (CD) savings account, and you will make an estimated monthly payment of $46.81 following your repayment schedule. Your account will earn interest while you repay the loan3.
We will report your monthly payments to all four major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, TransUnion, and Innovis.
The funds in your Credit Builder Account will be deposited into your Sunrise Banks Checking or Savings Account4 once you make your final payment.
What do you need to apply?
- A government issued ID
- A Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
- Address verification
- No proof of income needed
Frequently Asked Questions
With a Sunrise Banks Credit Builder loan, you’re approved for a small loan amount, but you don’t receive the funds upfront. Instead, the loan amount is placed into a Certificate of Deposit that acts as collateral. You make fixed monthly payments over the loan term and Sunrise Banks reports your payment history to Experian, Equifax, TransUnion and Innovis. Once the loan is fully paid, the funds in the CD are released to you.
You apply through Sunrise Banks and choose from the available loan options. While typical requirements for credit building loan approval may vary by lender, we keep the process straightforward. To apply, you’ll need a government-issued ID, your Social Security number or ITIN and address verification. Proof of income is not required, though applicants using an ITIN must apply in person at one of our MN or SD branches. If approved, your loan is opened and the funds are placed into a secured CD.
Yes. While Sunrise Banks branches are located in Minnesota and South Dakota, our Credit Builder Program is available to applicants nationwide through our easy online application. If you prefer in-person service or need to apply using an ITIN, you’ll need to visit one of our MN or SD branches.
A Credit Builder loan is designed for people who want to establish credit for the first time or strengthen an existing credit profile. It can be a helpful step if you have limited credit history or are working to build a stronger payment record. Participation does not guarantee a credit score increase, but consistent, on-time payments can support long-term credit growth.
The key is your payment history. Sunrise Banks reports your monthly payments to the major credit bureaus so that each on-time payment adds to your credit record. Over time, a consistent history of paying as agreed can demonstrate responsible borrowing behavior, an important factor in credit scoring models.
Yes. Like any loan product, approval is not guaranteed. Sunrise Banks evaluates applications according to our underwriting standards.
You repay the loan through fixed monthly payments over the selected term, such as 12 or 18 months, depending on what you choose. Payments are due each month by the scheduled due date. Once all required payments are made and the loan is satisfied, the funds in the secured CD are credited to a Sunrise Banks checking or savings account, or mailed to you by check if you don’t have one.
While missed payments can affect your account status and may negatively impact your credit, Sunrise Banks can work with you if you anticipate having difficulty making a payment. In many cases, we can close your Credit Builder Loan before a late payment is reported to the credit bureaus, helping you avoid negative credit reporting related to the loan. Individual credit outcomes may vary, and we encourage customers to make payments on time and contact us as soon as possible if they expect to miss a payment.
There is no guaranteed timeline for credit improvement. Credit scores can change as payment information is reported, but results vary based on your overall credit profile and history. Participation in the program does not guarantee a specific score increase.
Cosigners are not required for a Credit Builder loan at Sunrise Banks. Approval is based on our application and underwriting process. If you have questions about your specific situation, we recommend getting in touch with our team.
