He is a social entrepreneur and innovator who strives to forge meaningful partnerships, drive sustainable economic growth and create financial empowerment for all.

Family History at Sunrise Banks

Sunrise Banks has been serving the urban core of Minneapolis and St. Paul since 1989. In 2013, David, and his father William, made the strategic decision to bring the individual banks they owned and operated together under one brand name and mission – to be a force for good.

“To me, being a force for good means doing the right thing for people and the planet,” says David. “It is the thing that excites me most about our work at Sunrise Banks. We want to lead, create and inspire so that we can empower good in our communities.”

Guided by David’s leadership, Sunrise Banks has expanded its reach by focusing on people, access, community impact and social responsibility. In 2009, Sunrise Banks became the first Certified B Corporation in Minnesota. To date, it remains the only B Corp Bank in Minnesota and the only B Corp in South Dakota. Sunrise Banks is certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), with at least 60% of the bank’s lending supporting low-to-moderate income customers and communities.

David’s involvement in the community and financial sector goes well beyond Sunrise Banks. He is the current chair of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), a network of more than 70 banks around the world, including Sunrise Banks, that use finance to deliver sustainable economic, social, and environmental development.

David has served on various boards, including the Community Development Bankers Association, Entrepreneur’s Organization of Minnesota and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Community Bank Advisory Board.
