Nonprofit Partnerships: How Sunrise Banks is Investing in the Local Community

People holding shovels for a groundbreaking event.

Nonprofits are deeply woven into the fabric of Minnesota. These organizations seek to meet identified needs of the community that are seen as unmet or underserved. As a mission-driven community bank, we understand and invest in the work and success of nonprofits. Like attracts like, and fostering partnerships between mission-minded organizations comes naturally for Sunrise Banks.

As part of our effort to be a force for good, we are excited to continue our work of partnering and investing in those whose mission is to make a difference in our communities.

Sunrise Banks Differentiators

Volunteers building a Habitat for Humanity house. At Sunrise Banks, we’ve partnered with nonprofits that intersect with nearly every industry. We’ve worked with organizations of every size, from small school-based organizations to medium-sized supportive housing and healthcare institutions to large social-service and education-focused agencies across the Twin Cities. We’ve had relationships with many of them for years, helping some get off the ground in their earliest beginnings, supporting others as they look to add staff and locations, buy or build buildings and expand their reach and impact even further.

A key component of working with nonprofits for a bank is understanding the organization’s mission and how it works financially. Nonprofits do not operate in the same way as for-profit businesses. There are similarities, but a nonprofit does not seek to return a large net profit. Instead, it is accountable to its mission and the public rather than to an ownership team or group of shareholders.

A bank needs to understand that financial soundness and strength for a nonprofit means using the funds available to meet its mission while maintaining sufficient reserves to weather cash flow swings and unexpected events.

At Sunrise Banks, we are uniquely able to support nonprofits with products tailored to their needs, such as fraud protection tools and fully-insured deposit options. At the same time, we offer a critical human element: a relationship-first experience with bankers who know the organization’s mission, history and staff. Working with us means getting a real person on the phone or behind an email who knows what it means to have a mission and why that matters.

Partnerships in the Community

Simpson Housing Services Off Site Link opened a new community shelter and transitional apartment building in Minneapolis in January. Avenues for Youth Off Site Link is set to open a shelter this spring that will meet the needs of homeless youth in Minneapolis, providing overnight beds as well as longer-term supportive housing units.

It can be expensive to rent kitchen space for budding entrepreneurs, and NEON Collective Kitchens will be accessible for those looking for somewhere safe and affordable to work.

Small businesses are key economic engines in communities, but there are many challenges to getting started. This space will provide both the access and technical support needed by those working to achieve those dreams.

Our partnership with these organizations goes beyond a standard bank account or loan; Sunrise Banks has also provided New Market Tax Credit allocations, deposit account support, treasury management products and general bank sponsorship, including employee volunteer time.

Finding Creative Solutions

When we start working with a nonprofit, our goal is to help meet the needs of the organization, whether that’s through our banking products and services or by using our decades-long investment in the community to pull in partners to provide other kinds of expertise or support. Very often it’s both. The strength of our community depends on the strength of our nonprofits.

At Sunrise Banks, we’ve chosen to invest in our community and the nonprofits that are working to make it better. It can be difficult to find a bank with a similar mission, but investing in that partnership maximizes the impact and makes Minnesota a great place for all its citizens to work, live and thrive.
